In 1869 Alexander and George Cairncross founded A & G Cairncross. Alexander remained a bachelor but George married and had a son and two daughters. George’s son James Charles Cairncross known as Hamish died in 1921, with the responsibility of running the business falling to Hamish’s sons James (Jimmie) and Alistair Cairncross. These two well respected and affable brothers on retiring in 1988 sold the business to Mrs. Flora Rennie.
